The story moves at snail pace from the first to second one. This game was always about tongue-in-cheek/inside jokes, having fun with the novelties of simulating the mundane. Then S2 has even more time killers - working the Lucky Hit stand, following people, getting all your money stolen in the first section of the game. It almost feels like the pod racing of Phantom Menace, in how much forklifting there is (5 days of morning races and working a 9-5 shift). Half of S1 is literally forklifting and taking the bus.
Good grief I am reminded what actual “grinds” the first two were. I’m kind of hell bent on defending 3, cause I can’t for the life of me figure out why someone would claim the new one is a “grind filler” while the originals aren’t. 3rd one is a hair more modernized, more fast-tracking and better controls.
And I frankly still enjoyed the first game. after you asked everybody in town about where the sailors hang out. An entire disc of the game was basically spent on finding a mirror in your basement, getting conned out of 60k yen, and taking a bus to the warehouses. My impression is that if you truly dislike this game, you either didn’t put enough time to get over the slow hump of every Shenmue game, or you’re just not into the style of game anymore.

I also wish a little more was explained at the end, but it’s a good setup for S4. I didn’t think it was bad, it was entertaining, good action, but the execution was not up to Yu’s standards - felt rushed.įrankly, the story overall moves pretty well. Was still good, but just felt more like a B-grade kung-fu flick than the paced Shenmue tale. It doesn’t bother me as much (Shenmue’s gameplay needs interaction and mini games, you couldn’t have an empty forest), and Bailu felt pretty real besides for having the arcade/mini-games.īut Niaowu felt more like a HK town than an 80s Communist Chinese city, though perhaps the city is fictional for a reason. Usual sights for Ryo, as if you’re still in Japan or Hong Kong. Yu didn’t really make 80s rural, small-town China feel authentic enough.
